Reader beware because reading this can initiate a series of events to transpire that will destroy the current version of “you” and open a doorway that once passed through, there is no turning back. If you are comfortable with your predictable life and fear the unknown, then stop reading now. In much lore, once you read about this, “eyes” will be cast upon you, and things beyond mundane comprehension are said to become aware of your existence.

To “enter Chapel Perilous” is allegedly a task that one should not take lightly, because insanity may follow. Once you cross the threshold into Chapel Perilous, there is no turning back, and the outcomes are dangerous, to say the least.  Any true spirit-seeker must experience this to gain true enlightenment. It is a state where the “veil of reality” melts away, and a person confronts the ineffable and bizarre aspects of existence hidden from ordinary people. Those who traverse into the unknown of Chapel Perilous unprepared have only one fate, which is to go completely mad.

Many who enter the Chapel Perilous never exit and are later diagnosed with mental illness.

The “Chapel Perilous” is an esoteric term in which one enters a state of mind that one cannot tell the difference between vivid imagination and paranormal occurrences. It is the roadsign to High Strangeness and the sink or swim test that all who wish to tear down the walls veiling a much more vast universe must go through. But as dangerous as it may be, it is critical in conquering the greatest obstacle to unlocking one’s full occult potential. And that obstacle is fear.

“Chapel Perilous was used as a Discordian term by the late writer and philosopher Robert Anton Wilson in his 1977 book Cosmic Trigger. According to Wilson, being in this state leads the subject to become either stone paranoid or an agnostic… there is no third way.”

(However, to the awakened there is a third way through, or even more, Robert Wilson just lacked testicular fortitude and occult knowledge. It is his opinion alone that there are only two outcomes to the Chapel Perilous.)

Everything that one accepts as “real” will be tested.

Modern science actually supports the premice of Chapel Perilous. In physics, among other experiments, the Double Slit Experiment objectively proves through the scientific method that matter acts differently if a conscious being is looking at it or not. Upon entering the Chapel, you confront the fact that reality and beliefs are plastic and malleable. Like the “Brain in a Jar” thought experiment, you’ve actually never seen anything, and all you’ve ever experienced is merely electrical sparks in your brain. You can’t prove anyone else exists but you, and to enter the Chapel confronts you about this delusion you consider to be you. Belief and the subconscious mind shapes the world around you, and either closes or opens doors of perception from beyond the control or awareness of the conscious ego-mind. But, the veil is there for a good reason (or is it?), and that’s to keep you from going insane or going outside the accepted confines the herd accepts as true.

As one passes through the Chapel Perilous, they’re forced to confront the notion that there are outside forces influencing humanity, as well as the supernatural being very real, or just a delusion in their mind. The person will begin to see, feel, and think impossible things that could never exist in their former life, and the struggle to conclude whether they are real or imaginary will be harrowing.

“Do you actually believe there is something out there to affect you or is it all just perceptual change through belief? Here is the place where Reasonable Logic dies.” -John Kreiter

In the Chapel, you will experience truly High Strangeness, and things you formerly believed were impossible. The people in pictures, posters, or paintings you may catch looking at you, but when you look away and look back, they are ordinary once again. You may go to grab a soda can you know to be empty to throw away, yet somehow it slips through your fingers being anomalously heavy. The reality around you will begin to “play” with you, it may seem. And entities of a different vibration will be aware of you.

Are spirits real? Is what you see real?

John Keel briefly explores the Chapel Perilous in his famous book The Mothman Prophecies. He talks about how once one sees a paranormal entity (and the experience isn’t suppressed), they are in great danger because now many doors are opened, which allows paranormal phenomena to be accepted by the subconscious. And once the subconscious mind believes in the supernatural… The barriers keeping it at bay break down.

“Which is the idea that once you see the paranormal (or some other paranormal creature); there is no going back to sanity. Now you have become paranormal entity public enemy number one and it will therefore do anything to take you out or drive you mad just to protect its secret existence.”

The Mothman Prophecies by John Keel

When the fog hiding the truth of existence fades, it leads one to question their sanity. In the Chapel Perilous, you’ll not be sure what’s real or imagined. The Chapel will destroy dogmatic religious beliefs and cultural indoctrination and all past accepted narratives from the mainstream herd. A glimpse of a much bigger picture will form, and the reality destroying epiphanies can be soul-shattering. The mental nature of matter is too much for some to bear, and many who leave the Chapel Perilous are broken husks of people.

You will question “Are there forces out there right now manipulating me?”  which is a good question.

However, the term Chapel Perilous is first mentioned in the legends of King Arthur. is the final confrontation, and bore the curse of death; that is why it has become a cemetery for all those who sought the Grail. Thirty mighty knights in black armor guard it. The silent knights are horrifying and unnerving, as well as supernaturally formidable in battle. Sir Lancelot must face the trials of the Chapel and escape alive to save a fellow Knight of the Round Table.

“Such an adventure befalls Gawain on his way to the Grail Castle is overtaken by a terrible storm, and coming to a Chapel, standing at a crossway in the middle of a forest, enters for shelter. The altar is bare, with no cloth, or covering, nothing is thereon but a great golden candlestick with a tall taper burning within it. Behind the altar is a window, and as Gawain looks a Hand, black and hideous, comes through the window, and extinguishes the taper, while a voice makes lamentation loud and dire, beneath which the very building rocks.”

So much metaphor and analogy are wrapped in these legends that are actually based on even older legends from beyond recorded history. According to Jungian Psychology, they are deeply rooted in the collective human unconscious.

In modern-day psychology, Chapel Perilous is a term used to describe a mental state in which one cannot be sure whether one has been or is being helped or hindered by a force outside of the natural world. But, any perception stuck in the narrow, and limited reality tunnel of mainstream society should never be absorbed dogmatically. Madness is all around us, and when society agrees upon it, it becomes fact.

“All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusions is called a philosopher.”

-Ambrose Bierce

Someone entering the Chapel Perilous may not even be aware they’re doing so, which adds to the danger. It can seem social, philosophical, mental, dream-like, or even physical. The telltale sign of entering the Chapel is that one is exposed quite forcefully to things that go against their perception of reality. It will always be unique to each individual person and based off of what their consciousness can comprehend. There are some who merely stand at the door, unaware of the Chapel’s existence. Others can get confused and lost for all time within the Chapel (reality escapist). Most run back out the front door and try their best to suppress the memories, though forever afterward are mentally ill. However, some enter the Chapel Perilous and actually exit through the other side.

Encountering ghostly entities in the Chapel is common.

As one walks through the door, they face the fact that their reality is not reality but based on their social conditioning, subconscious programming, perceptions, experiences, and beliefs. The few who can pass through the Chapel and out the other side for the better forever know that reality is malleable, and much of it can be altered or exposed to conscious awareness from hidden depths of the Dark Sea (AKA existence).

Some people experience the Chapel Perilous as metaphysical experiences with aliens with interesting narratives, such as the person channeling messages from them physically. Or conspiracy theories (no matter how ridiculous) becoming very real around them in their day to day lives that really aren’t their lives at all.

Many close encounters and channelings are said to have occurred in the Chapel.

“Chapel Perilous, like the mysterious entity called ‘I,’ cannot be located in the space-time continuum; it is weightless, odorless, tasteless, and undetectable by ordinary instruments. Indeed, like the Ego, it is even possible to deny that it is there. And yet, even more, like the Ego, once you are inside it, there doesn’t seem to be any way to ever get out again, until you suddenly discover that it has been brought into existence by thought and does not exist outside thought. Everything you fear is waiting with slavering jaws in Chapel Perilous, but if you are armed with the wand of intuition, the cup of sympathy, the sword of reason, and the pentacle of valor, you will find there (the legends say) the Medicine of Metals, the Elixir of Life, the Philosopher’s Stone, True Wisdom, and Perfect Happiness.”

-Anton Wilson

Metaphorically and symbolically, if you journey into the Chapel without certain things, you are doomed. If you go in without the Sword of Reason, you go insane. If you enter without the Wand of Intuition, you will not even be aware you’re inside the Chapel (you could be in it right now. Are you?). Without the Cup of Sympathy, you will lose your humanity. Without the Pentacle of Valor, you will run from what you must face. The only true way out (that will benefit a person) is through.

“In Darkness, I am Light. In times of doubt, I keep faith. When gripped by fear, I have courage undaunted. And will live my life without remorse, UNBOUND!” -Anonymous

What are you afraid of?

The dangers and traps of the Chapel are specifically designed for each individual person, and there to bring out their weaknesses and fears they must overcome in a very direct manner. The Universe is always giving clues about itself, with 99% of humanity stuck in reality tunnels unable to see. But, the Universe is fractal, malleable, and contains countless realities, all overlapping and intersecting. Those who enter the Chapel Perilous are unable to look away. Answeres are nebulous and ever-shifting and within the doors, those who don’t notice the signs exist in the tiniest state of existence as if in a prison cell. However, those who realize they are inside will slowly find reality around them getting weirder and weirder.

“CHAPEL PERILOUS is the place ‘souls’ go after leaving their robot bodies…while these bodies are still alive and walking the planet’s surface. Also known as “The Dark Night of the Soul.” It relates to post-Factor X activities in that both refer to “out-of-body” states. However, CHAPEL PERILOUS is where souls go when they are lost and Factor X communications refer to how souls are found. Can also be seen as a negative activation of the “neurosomatic circuit,” which is endured for as long as it takes the neophyte to effect a positive activation, or permanent body rapture.” – From The Game of Life by Dr. Timothy Leary

Sooooo much reported paranormal encounters are actually just someone merely dipping their feet in the Chapel Perilous. It is quite literally just the “tip of the iceberg” to a much greater reality. When the abyss forms before you, then you must jump inside. One must face uncertainty and the unknown with a cocky smirk, and make their way through the Chapel and out the other side. It is what separates the phonies and the real deal.

Have you seen the repeating numbers?

Are you in the Chapel Perilous right now?
